Computerworld - over a month ago we got the first non-Latin scripted Top Level Domain, which were acquired by Arabic speaking countries: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt. ICANN has now also confirmed new top level domains in Chinese scripting, that will allow the registration of domain names entirely in symbolic language. So far, at least the ending (.cn) had to stand in Latin. Besides that whole domain name was already allowed in Chinese letters. New top level domains will be managed by China Internet Network Information Center, Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation and Taiwan Network Information Center.

The first domain name in Chinese characters is expected within the next three months. ICANN's Executive Director said that the new change will benefit one of every five people on the planet. This innovation certainly means a lot of work for Web applications developers and managers of various firewall filters, who will have to upgrade their white and black lists of domains. Domains, despite the presentation will be in different fonts, though still reachable thru Latin characters using punycode. You can check whether your browser already supports punycode on the ICANN's site.

The next countries in line for local domains are: Tunisia, Qatar, Jordan and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in Arabic, Sri Lanka and the Tamil and Sinhalese in Thai Thailand…

CNET - After more than five years of talks and persuading, ICANN finally approved the .XXX domain which will be devoted to pornography. Yesterday, biggest supporter of .xxx domains, and future registrar ICMRegistrary announced victory, as ICANN conditionally allowed new domains. ICMRegistrary gave a bunch of reasons for .xxx domain, ranging from more efficient and transparent distribution of such content on the Internet, and better advertising revenue for the owners of domains. It is also no secret that the collection of new domain registration fees will be ritch.ICANN only told ICMRegistrary that they will check the financial and technical capabilities of the Registrar, to operate the new domain. The next step will be negotiations on a contract that will stipulate the precise obligations and responsibilities of both parties. Only after that will the domain .XXX be finally approved. But all this could happen as early as October. This would mean that the domain name. Xxx will be operational before year's end.

ICMRegistry said that they already have over 110,000 new .xxx domain reservations. Move to .xxx domain will be entirely voluntary, so other pornographic sites may also stay on other domains. The ICMRegistrary hopes to collect over $30 million in first year, since the domain name for one year would cost 60 dollars. Of which $ 10 went to nonprofit organizations for child protection.

Existing agreement with USA expired in late September. By signing of the new agreement ICANN’s aspirations for the independence supported by European Union came true. ICANN will no longer answer to the U.S. ICANN still remains non-profit organization, but now no longer under the control of any single country. The European Commission has already expressed his satisfaction with the new regime.

Whether this brings any changes to registering domains under any TLD remains unknown, but judging from experience things will go just more smoothly from now on… Also it is not likely that domain pricing will change.

ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), has been the heart of Internet from 1998. (...)

ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), has been the heart of Internet from 1998. ICANN coordinates the Internet's address system and parts of the Internet's backbone connections. As a nonprofit organization located in California, ICANN has been under pressure by politics, and in the center of heated worldwide debates over who should control the Internet… On September 30th this year, joint agreement between U.S. Department of Commerce and E.U. expires, so talks between European Union commissioner Viviane Reding and President Obama are ongoing. Viviane Reding wants ICANN to be made accountable to an international body - a "G12 for Internet governance.", rather than just to US. ICANN just got new president and CEO - Rod Beckstrom (the former U.S. cybersecurity chief). Beckstrom will be replacing Dr. Paul Twomey who had been serving this position since March 2003. Board of ICANN argues that it is ready to stand on its own… Future of ICANN is not clear as of this moment, but we can speculate that US will not want to release it from its grip.

Internet will continue to change as ICANN opens it to millions of new users outside the United States. First major changes will be international top-level domain names in non ASCII characters. This will most probably happen in first quarter of 2010, for number of countries including the northeast and south Asia, Arab countries, the Indians, the Arabic-speaking Farsi. Even bigger expansion will take place few months later with China, Bulgaria, Greece and the Russia. All these countries expressed strong interest in having top domains in their own letters/alphabet. Most existing registrars will apply for service in new tld domains as well, so people can register new domain names with companies they already know.

Why is this such a big priority? Imagine India. Government is installing fiber into 600,000 villages across India. Around 150 million of population speaks English, but the next billion does not. India is complicated, because it has 22 official languages and 11 scripts. ICANN’s mission is to design these changes so that everything will still work together. An bad example would be proprietary solution : for example in the Middle East, where there were some ideas to put mechanism fully Arabic experience at the ISP level. The difficulty with that is that if you went to Switzerland on holidays, it wouldn't work, you could not connect “home”. ICANN is working on mechanism that would work no matter where you are. Internet is only one single global network, connected with technology like TCP/IP protocol which doesn't recognize geographic boundaries.

The problem with non ASCII characters is – how to type Chinese domain name, if I don’t have Chinese keyboard. Solution is simple – businesses usually have many domain names.. Like company.com (for international visitors), then company.au for Australian customers, company.hk for Hong Kong Chinese… Even in ASCII, people use domain names as a form of identity. With global domain names we will see even more international domain name country codes. Most probably international sites will have domain names in many character sets – resolving to same host/server. If they will only have Chinese domain, they are probably not interested in international visitors/customers – meaning – business or interest is only local.

In mid 2010 a series of city domains will be available. Like "dot berlin," "dot paris," "dot london," "dot nyc." … Currently there are over 170 million registered domain names in the world. Over half are under various country codes. The most popular "Dot com" just grew past 80 million domains, making it the most popular generic top-level domain.

Over 70 percent of the registrations are in North America, so in some respects, "dot com" is the de facto country code for the United States. As recession is hitting on worldwide population, more people are losing their jobs, and more and more are deciding they want to set up small businesses on the internet – and they will need a domain name. Many will buy new domain names, but sometimes secondary market offers valuable existing domain names with history, and good value, which might be a better choice. But in this case it is important to know how to appraise domain names. So expectation that the top-level domain space would go flat and that only country codes would keep increasing is far from truth. At least for now…

Where do you register your domains? I use GoDaddy for number of reasons, one of which is overall quality and excellent customer support. (...)

Where do you register your domains? I use GoDaddy for number of reasons, one of which is overall quality and excellent
customer support. But mostly - because you can find numerous discount coupons floating around at any time… If you ever
registered new or renewed existing domain at GoDaddy at list price - you made a big mistake… Just google for example for
"godaddy .net coupon", and open just fresh pages (with 2009 date), and then try few of the coupons out (on your order page, at the bottom, where the total amount is listed, you will find a field “Coupon”)… You can save big, especially if you have
many domains…

Here are three coupons that work as of today (27.february 2009):

emma3 = .COM domain for 7.49USD (works on new reg's and renewals)
gc749dom = 7,49 USD .COM for new and renewals
gdbb776 = 6,99 USD .INFO and 7,49 USD .NET domains - works for renewals too!

But if you use privacy option (hidden whois data with domain), which is great to hide your email from spammers etc, then
consider DomainSite… Plain domain registration is a bit more expensive as at godaddy's, but privacy option
is just 0,5 USD per YEAR (in comparison, godaddy's service DomainsByProxy charges 7$/year!!! - or its free for one year
if you buy 6 new domains - but after first year - well, transfer them to DomainSite for best price)…

You will note that there are no affiliate links here – as I do not want to “sell” you these domain registrars. I recommend them because they are best value for me. If you know better – please leave a feedback!

A Domain name appraisal is an estimate about the likely price of a particular Internet domain name. The appraisal of domain names is highly speculative as it is more of an opinion rather than a procedure.

I am going to list out some of the ways to do a domain appraisal on your own. Domain names with hyphen and number are not very popular among buyers. So when you buy domain names, always try to buy single words which are easy to remember. Try giving out the domain name over the phone and see if it is easier to remember the words of the domain name for people listening on the phone. The other important thing is the length of the domain name; it is less valuable if it has more than 15 characters.

It is also very important to advertise your domain-name, they more they have heard of the name, the pricier the domain is. It also helps if your domain is similar sounding to the service you provide like Business.com or Joetheplumber.com. Most of the people prefer the Top Level Domains also called as TLD’s, the ones which are favored by most people are .com followed by .org or .net, other country wide domains like .us or .co.uk are also in demand. It is not a necessity but most of the people prefer domain-names which have been developed, most of the times Splash page is enough but some people like the domains with traffic. Site Traffic by search engines is also taken into consideration during the value of the domain.

It is also very important for keywords in domain-name to rank well in search engines, you can command a higher price if it is ranked well. Last but not least, if it is a revenue generating domain, the easiest way to sell is to multiply 2.5 with the yearly revenue and you have a good price.
